152 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch Central / by Nat Voisey

Completed in 1925 for the Public Trust Office, 152 Oxford Terrace was designed by one of Christchurch’s most celebrated architects, Cecil Wood. A truly grand design, it was designed to portray strength and stability to the people of Christchurch. At the time of completion, Hurst Seager said of its design “it strikes a new note in Christchurch.”

Work to strengthen and refurbish this iconic masterpiece was completed in 2020 and the building is now home to a number of professional services, safety deposit boxes and a rooftop bar and restaurant with stunning views over the City and the Otakaro River.

The striking gilded coat of arms frames the grand entrance off Oxford Terrace, bringing you into the 6m high lobby through a refurbished timber revolving door (built in 1919). The building lobby showcases a beautiful Terrazzo floor and ornate ceilings and pillars. Its original steel framed elevator shaft and stairwell feature throughout the building and every effort has been made to ensure new works compliment the building and honour its original design.

The building once again houses safety deposit boxes with Commonwealth Vault setting up a brand new facility on the lower ground floor and a reception area on the ground floor. The building includes multiple office premises ranging from the grand 450sqm ground floor north facing office housing Jeuneora, through to 250sqm floors and smaller office suites with shared services and facilities.

The redesigned and refurbish top floor is leased to Mr Brightside - one of only two Christchurch rooftop bars in the city. With its extensive views over the city, it’s an exceptional place to visit and provides an opportunity for the public to experience a remarkable icon of the City’s heritage and be part of its 100 year journey.
