159 Manchester Street, Christchurch Central / by Nat Voisey

Constructed for the Canterbury Terminating Building Society between 1957 and 1960, it was the first large scale office building to be constructed in Christchurch post WWII and Peter Beaven’s first major project.

Purchased by Box 112 in 2017, the building has been strengthened to 100%NBS and repurposed into a hotel and hospitality property, opening in 2020.

Levels 1 – 5 have been repurposed into a 40 room boutique are hotel, The Muse. Each level promotes a different local Christchurch artist with commissioned pieces in each room and a mural in each lift lobby. A mid-century modern style fitout throughout the hotel upholds the era of this building and a number of original features have been retained and showcased, creating a stunning arts hotel unlike anything Christchurch has seen before. Being able to design a hotel that celebrates both the work of the late Mr Beaven and of local artists was an extremely rewarding experience and the well-respected hotelier, Sarin Group, will continue to promote and celebrate Christchurch Art and Architecture.

Levels 6 & 7 have been repurposed into hospitality and fitted out in a 1960’s mid-century modernist style. The original steel framed windows and doors leading to the cantilevered veranda (L6) and terrace (L7) have been retained and are functional.

Level 7 was designed as a secret penthouse pavilion and was home to Beaven’s architectural practise for many years. Now a cocktail bar The Pink Lady, it has exceptional views over the city and a number of the iconic features of the building such as the angled balustrade, timber slatted shading and steel framed joinery are all still in place. Once a truly inspiring space for a leading Canterbury Architect, it’s now an inspiring place for people from all over the world to see the city from above and enjoy one of the last surviving structures from the “School of Christchurch.”

The building now has a Heritage Covenant in place to protect its future and its modern use as a hotel serves as an international icon of our City’s proud architectural history at a prominent Central City intersection.
